Heroes of Champions League
Champions League. The most prestigious club competition in football. There isn’t a single football fan out there who wouldn’t recognize the anthem of Champions League and to this date it will even give chills to the players who are standing on the pitch during the opening ceremonies. Champions League is a stage where superstars are born and legends are sementing their places in history. Let’s take a look at one of the most memorable heroes of Champions League.
Stevie G, the boy from Liverpool
That night in Istanbul. Doesn’t matter what team you support, you know what happened in Istanbul 2005. It was a Champions League final between Liverpool FC and AC Milan. AC Milan was a huge favourite to win the competition as they had players like Pirlo, Kaka, Crespo, Seedorf, Maldini, Sheva, etc. on their roster. What happened on that night will always be remembered of one of the craziest matches of Champions League history. After the first half, AC Milan was leading by 3-0. On the pitch there was a certain player who was maybe more upset than anyone else on the pitch. That man was born and raised in Liverpool and a man who wore the captain’s armband on his sleeve. Stevie G, better known as Steven Gerrard.
Steven Gerrard was under immense pressure from the Liverpool fans as he was at the time one of the (if not the best) best english players in the Premier League. He was also a local kid who grew up to become a captain of Liverpool FC. The only problem was that Steven Gerrard wasn’t able to win any major trophies for Liverpool, until 2005 and “that night” in Istanbul.
When the second half started, it took only few minutes and Liverpool managed to pull one back and make the scoreline 3-1. The goal scorer? Yup, you guessed it, Steven Gerrard with an beautiful header. The fire on Stevie G’s eyes lit up again and from that point, there was no way Liverpool would lose the match. After the goals of Smicer and Alonso, Liverpool managed to equalize the game 3-3 and it was time to take penalties. After it was all said and done, Stevie G was named man of the match and he hoisted the Champions League trophy in front of an estimated 40 000 Liverpool fans in the Istanbul Stadium.
Neymar and the infamous 6-1 against PSG
2017 PSG had managed to pull an amazing result at their home stadium against Barcelona. They’ve won 4-0 against one of the greatest teams of all time. This was all about to change as Barcelona decided to make history by winning the next match at home by 6-1. The true hero of that match was Neymar Jr. who scored two goals in the dying minutes of the game and then assisted a goal from Sergio Roberto that took Barcelona through the match-up by aggregate of 6-5.
